Why did you bring elements of magical realism into The Decoding of Lana Morris?

Laura: When Tom started writing this book, he wouldn’t even tell me what it was about. He knew I hate fantasy and science fiction, but he said there was a magical element he wanted to try. I was very worried that he would set the book in space. I thought it was never going to work out. (I feel exactly the same concern when he offers to cook dinner or to do the grocery shopping.) But when I read about the drawing paper, I was hooked.
